Five Mouth-Watering Veggie Burgers in Berlin

The most delicious vegetarian and vegan veggie burgers in Berlin, Germany.

Recently, Berlin has become famous as the contemporary vegetarian and vegan capital of the world.  There are more than fifty vegan and vegetarian restaurants across the city, along with health food stores in every neighborhood, meat substitutes in all the major supermarkets, and regular special events devoted to eating a cruelty-free, plant-based diet.

On top of that, nearly all of Berlin’s best restaurants have added vegetarian or vegan options to their menus, and Berlin’s celebrated burger restaurants were among the first restaurants to jump on the vegetarian-friendly bandwagon.  If you’re heading to Berlin in the near future, make sure to visit these five Berlin burger restaurants where the veggie burgers are even more delicious than their beefy counterparts.

This just might be the most German veggie burger in Berlin.  It starts with a homemade potato-spelt patty, and then gets topped with typically German condiments including sauerkraut, mayonnaise and ketchup, plus fresh vegetables.  Schiller Burger has five locations across the east side of Berlin, but its two most popular locations are just a couple of blocks away from Mauerpark and Tempelhofer Feld.

Shisho Burger offers customers creative burgers with an Asian flair, right in the heart of Berlin.  Their house veggie burger starts with a thick slice of pickled tofu, which is then accented by grilled eggplant, cheddar cheese, red onion, lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise and ketchup.  Recently, they’ve also added a “toad burger” centered around a grilled portobello mushroom. If you’re tired of burgers and fries, try one of their unique side dishes like edamame or kimchi.

The Bird in Berlin – The Lousy Hunter

Vegetarian in Germany - Veggie Burger at The Bird in Berlin

Don’t be offended by its cheeky name… the Lousy Hunter is one of the best veggie burgers available at any restaurant in Europe.  Order this veggie burger and you’ll get two deep-fried lentil and zucchini fritters, fresh vegetables and the cheese of your choice on an English muffin.  At The Bird in Berlin, vegetarians also get a complimentary guacamole or blue cheese dip for the heaping portion of fries that accompany their famous burgers.

Muse is an up-and-coming fusion restaurant in the trendy Prenzlaur Berg neighborhood of Berlin.  They offer a seasonal veggie burger inspired by fresh and local ingredients.  When I last visited, Muse was dishing up a veggie burger with a patty made from tofu, carrots and onions, which was then topped with provolone cheese, walnut-spinach pesto and guacamole.  However, now they’re featuring a fresh new (vegan!) variation, with a patty made from mushrooms, lentils, sweet potato and pumpkin seeds, served with chimichurri sauce and guacamole.

German-speakers might do a double-take when they read the name of this restaurant and the name of its signature veggie burger.  At BurgerAMT, the veggie burger starts with a thick slice of deep-fried halloumi cheese, and then gets slathered in rich homemade peanut sauce.  Yes, peanut sauce!  Tomato slices, thinly-sliced onions and fresh lettuce round out the toppings on this indulgent treat.  Make sure to head to the address shown below, as this restaurant shares a name with a local government registry office (the pun is intentional in German).

Krossener Straße 21-22 (on Google Maps)

English is widely spoken in Germany and every restaurant listed above will have someone on staff who can answer your questions in English.  If you have food allergies or require a vegan option, most of the restaurants above can easily accommodate your request, although it may add a few minutes to your wait time.

If you’re looking for a veggie burger in a different Berlin burger restaurant, look on the menu for words like vegetarische burger and vegane burger.  Alternately, look for a symbol on the menu – often, a green letter “V” or a small leaf symbol will indicate that a dish is meatless.

Most sit-down restaurants will include a service charge right on the bill, but you are welcome to round up by 5% or 10% if you’ve been particularly impressed by the service or the veggie burgers.
