The Best Hotels in the Aix-en-Provence City Center (and Beyond!)

The best hotels in Aix-en-Provence have two things in common: they are within easy walking distance of the historic city center, and they capture the refined elegance that the city is known for. Some are located right on Cours Mirabeau, one of the prettiest streets in France, while others are dotted in the flower-filled hills around the center of Aix. And, of course, some are budget-friendly, while others are a definite splurge.

I recently spent four nights in Aix-en-Provence, and during my visit I took note of the different hotels around town.  The following list includes the properties that I would recommend to other travelers, including budget options, vacation rentals and luxury properties.  Although I don’t typically travel with a car, I also looked into the best hotels near Aix-en-Provence for anyone who is comfortable driving into the city (they’re all less than 20 km from town).

Cheap Hotels in Aix-en-Provence

Aix-en-Provence doesn’t have any hostels, and the few affordable hotels in the city center tend to book up quickly.  If you want to stay at a cheap hotel in Aix-en-Provence, be sure to book your room as soon as you know your travel dates.

Hotel Cardinal

Hotel Cardinal is the most affordable hotel in the center of Aix-en-Provence.  A typical French-style family-run hotel, Hotel Cardinal is only two blocks away from the Granet Museum in the elegant Quartier Mazarin district.  Breakfast isn’t included in the rate, but it’s only a five-minute walk from the cafes that line Cours Mirabeau.  This is the area that I stayed in when I was in Aix, and I highly recommend it!

Hotel Le Mozart

Hotel Le Mozart is a ten-minute walk from Aix’s city center. If you don’t mind a short walk to and from town, you can find clean, comfortable and affordable rooms at this two-star hotel.  An optional breakfast is available on their sunny outdoor terrace, and there is ample free parking for guests arriving by car.

 

Bed and Breakfasts in Aix-en-Provence

Whenever I miss my mom I check into a bed and breakfast and let the doting host cook me breakfast and worry about whether I got too much sun.  These are two of the best bed and breakfasts in Aix-en-Provence if you need a little TLC.

Maison du Collectionneur

Some French B&Bs can seem dated and stuffy, but not this one!  Rooms at Maison du Collectionneur are bright, airy and modern, featuring fun design touches and upscale finishings.  Breakfast is served on the terrace in the summer, and features local pastries and other regional specialties.

La Chambre de Cezanne

If you’re arriving in Aix-en-Provence by car, you’ll definitely want to consider staying at La Chambre de Cezanne, a bed and breakfast with serious countryside vibes that is only a ten-minute walk from the city center.  I do need to mention that it’s an uphill walk, as it’s the same road you’d take to reach Cezanne’s Atelier (which is just another two minutes up the hill).  They have on-site parking and, more importantly, a beautiful swimming pool in their leafy garden!  This place books up early, so plan ahead for stays in 2024.

I love staying in apartments in the South of France, and Aix-en-Provence is the perfect place to rent an apartment and live like a local for a week or two!

Les Suites du Cours & Spa

Located directly on Cours Mirabeau, within easy walking distance of all of the attractions in Aix-en-Provence (as well as the train station), Les Suites due Cours & Spa has a variety of apartment rentals and an on-site spa.  If you’re on a budget, check out the Small Suite with Balcony, one of the most affordable accommodation options in the center of Aix. Typically, there is a four-night minimum stay here, so on the day you arrive you can hit up one of Aix’s markets to stock up on food and wine for a self-catering getaway.

Suite Le Cezanne

Located directly on Place Richelme, which is home to the daily fruit and vegetable market, Suite Le Cezanne is perfect for exploring Aix-en-Provence on foot. This air-conditioned apartment features modern design, simple kitchen facilities and air-conditioning (so important in the summer!).  The only downside here is that there’s no parking (due to its central location in the historic center), but there are two public parking lots within an easy five-minute walk.

Villa Zola

This one-bedroom apartment is located near Place Bellgarde, on the northeast corner of the historic city center.  From here, it’s an easy five-minute walk to most of the best attractions in Aix, including Place de l’Albertas and the City Hall.  Your host at Villa Zola will provide a basic breakfast, but I’d save the sweets and treats for an afternoon snack and instead enjoy a breakfast of local cheese and jam on fresh bread from one of the nearby markets.

Luxury Hotels in Aix-en-Provence

Aix-en-Provence is known for being a luxurious escape for well-heeled French citizens looking for respite from the big cities, and that reputation is reflected in the wide range of luxury hotels in Aix-en-Provence. From converted hotels particuliers in the historic center to sprawling villas in the hills surrounding the town, travelers with a bit of room in their budget will find a one-of-a-kind hotel in Aix.

Hotel Particulier le 28 by Les Collectionneurs

I love this luxurious boutique hotel in the Quartier Mazarin (my preferred area to stay in Aix). This was a 17th-century townhouse owned by a wealthy family, until 2001 when it was converted into a unique, design-focused luxury hotel.  There are only four suites at Hotel Particulier le 28, so you can expect personalized service and a calm atmosphere in the private gardens.

Villa Saint-Ange

A truly luxurious five-star property less than one kilometer from the city center, Villa Saint-Ange is located in a renovated 18th-century villa, complete with pool, gardens, spa and elevated Mediterranean restaurant.  Rooms here are decorated with antique furniture, colorful tilework, ornate wallpapers and other details that evoke all the glitz and glamour of the Golden Years.

Villa Gallici

I can’t resist a luxury hotel room that includes complimentary spa access, which is what makes Villa Gallici one of my top hotel picks in Aix-en-Provence. Villa Gallici has an on-site Carita spa, including a heated outdoor pool, Jacuzzi, hot sauna and cold sauna. Book a room with spa access so that you can rest and relax after a day of sightseeing in the city center, which is only a fifteen-minute walk away.

The Best Hotels Near Aix-en-Provence

These properties aren’t within walking distance of the center of Aix-en-Provence, but if you have a car then staying in the nearby countryside won’t be a problem (Aix has ample parking around the edges of the city center).

Mas Lou Félibrige

You’ll need a car to reach Mas Lou Félibrige, but you won’t be thinking about the fifteen-minute drive from your vacation rental into the center of Aix-en-Provence when you’re relaxing in your private sauna! This is the perfect place to call home for a few days, as you’ll have a fully-equipped kitchen, access to the garden with its seasonal swimming pool, and convenient connections (by car) to day trip throughout the Luberon.

L’Ansolanette – Chambre d’Hôtes

Less than twenty minutes by car from the center of Aix-en-Provence, this guesthouse is located in the little village of Fuveau, which has its own charming assortment of local restaurants, shops and services.  Rooms at L’Ansolanette are affordably priced and feature all the amenities you’d expect, including air conditioning, flat-screen TVs and coffee makers. Even better, there’s a refreshing outdoor pool with sun loungers and a shaded cabana.

Château de la Gaude

Tossing this one out there because it has an actual labyrinth and the website says it’s perfect for butterfly-hunting. 😉 Click for butterflies.
