After spending a summer in Portugal, I can easily say that Óbidos was one of my favorite destinations in Portugal. Although many people visit Óbidos on a day trip from Lisbon, I think it’s worth staying overnight (or longer!) if possible. There are many hotels in Óbidos that offer memorable accommodation experiences ranging from staying inside a hotel to waking up with an aqueduct view to staying on the grounds of an iconic church.
I’ve rounded up a list of the best hotels in Obidos at every price point. Whether you prefer to stay in a shared dorm room or at a luxurious golf resort, you should be able to find your perfect accommodation in Obidos on my list.
Cheap Hotels in Obidos
Portugal used to be one of the cheapest countries to visit in Europe, but in recent years prices have skyrocketed. These relatively cheap hotels in Obidos have great ratings, so you’ll have a comfortable stay and money to spend on ginjinha (the city’s famous cherry liqueur).
As with other cities in Portugal, many of the cheapest hotels in Obidos are alojamento local, a category broadly including guesthouses, BnBs, vacation rentals and other properties that may not be staffed 24/7.
Aquae Ductus Suites Obidos
This is where I stayed in Obidos. I was in town during the annual Obidos Medieval Festival and knew that I wanted to stay outside of the walled town so that I could have a quiet night’s sleep. Aquae Ductus Suites is a ten-minute walk from the historic center, along a pathway that follows the ancient aqueduct. Shown above is the actual view from my room.
As an alojamento local, this property is not staffed and it operates more like a vacation rental. There are several guest rooms spread over two floors, and on the ground floor there is a shared terrace and breakfast room (you’ll find a coffee maker, fridge and utensils here, but no sink or cooking facilities). If you’re coming by car there is tons of parking on the residential streets around the guesthouse.
At night, parts of the walk back are poorly lit, but I felt very safe (even as a solo female) because many locals were around walking their dogs and going to and from town for the evening.
Hospederia do Senhor da Pedra
Savvy travelers know that when you’re looking for affordable accommodation, guesthouses in monasteries, nunneries and churches are often a great option.
This guesthouse is located on the grounds of the Senor da Pedra church, about 750 down the road from the historical center of Obidos. There is a sidewalk the whole way, but there is one section (about 50 meters) where cars seem to park on the sidewalk, so you do have to walk along the edge of the road. If you’re coming by car, there is tons of parking at the church.
At Hospederia Senor da Pedra, you’ll find affordable double rooms and suites for rent. They are clean, bright, and well-equipped, and the host is known to be super-helpful. As an added bonus, one of Obidos’ best restaurants is located right next door.
Hostel Argonauta
Backpacking in Obidos? Hostel Argonauta is the best option for connecting with other backpackers and solo travelers, as they offer one of the only dorms in the town.
Hostel Argonauta is located right outside the city walls in the historical center of Obidos. Both the dorms and the double room (with shared bathroom) are decorated with traditional and local arts and crafts, and the communal is well-equipped if you enjoy self-catering.
Like other alojamento local, you may not encounter any on-site staff here. Check-in instructions will be sent in advance via the Booking messenger, WhatsApp or email, so make sure you have internet access in the lead-up to your arrival.
Casa de S. Thiago de Obidos
It’s true that prices do go up a bit when you’re inside the historical city walls of Obidos, but Casa de S. Thiago de Obidos remains one of the most affordable options in the center, as well as one of the best-rated guesthouses.
They have several different double rooms here, including an economy option and a more family-style room with space for one child. The rooms here have private bathrooms, and there is an option to order a lovely breakfast for a very reasonable price.
Obviously, as this hotel is inside the walled medieval center, there is no on-site parking. You’ll need to park about five minutes away and roll or carry your luggage up a moderate hill to this property.

Luxury Hotels in Obidos
If you’re looking for a more upscale hotel in Obidos, I’ve got you covered! These three properties have great reviews and offer a more luxurious experience than those I mentioned above.
Pousada Castelo Obidos
Have you always dreamed of spending the night in a castle? Look no further than Pousada Castelo de Obidos, the only accommodation inside the town’s ancient medieval castle.
Rooms and common areas here have sweeping views of the nearby countryside and the historic center, and the design often features original touches (such as exposed stone walls). If you’re visiting during the annual medieval festival, the festivities will be taking place right at your door. As a bonus, the on-site restaurant serves a delicious breakfast that is included in most room rates.
Make sure you book one of the classic “Castle” rooms if you want to stay inside the castle; the superior rooms without the “castle” notation are located in the “Casa de Castelo” next door.
Casa Lidador
I don’t understand how I didn’t notice Casa Lidador when I was exploring Obidos! You’ve got to click through to see the beautiful photos of this four-star hotel in Obidos, where you can relax on the sun-drenched outdoor terrace or cool off in the outdoor pool. I can only assume that it has a nondescript facade or is tucked off on a side street because this place looks like an oasis in the historical center of Obidos!
Royal Obidos Spa & Golf Resort
For full transparency, I didn’t have time to check out this luxury hotel located twenty minutes (by car) outside the historical center of Obidos, towards the Atlantic coastline. Again, the pictures of this property look spectacular, with beautiful outdoor and indoor pools, a relaxing spa and stunning contemporary architecture.
Accommodation options at the Royal Obidos Spa & Golf Resort include a range of standard hotel rooms and apartments with kitchenettes, many of which have gorgeous sea views. The on-site restaurant gets rave reviews, with the included breakfast being a particular highlight. Since you’ll need to come by car to stay here, make sure to drive a few minutes further towards the coast to visit the beautiful Obidos Lagoon.
Other Hotels in Obidos
Typically, I only include hotels that I personally stayed at or checked out during my travels and that have a great rating from other travelers. Two of the most popular hotels in Obidos fall just a little bit short of the “great” mark, with reviews placing them in the “good” category (with scores between 7.3 and 7.7 out of 10 on Booking). They both have something really unique to offer, though, so it’s worth reading recent reviews and considering if they’re a good fit for your own trip to Obidos.
The Literary Man Hotel Obidos
If you love books, stay at the Literary Man Obidos Hotel.
This hotel has 30 rooms and 45,000 books. That’s a pretty good ratio if you ask me! Most of the books are part of the hotel’s bookshop collection, but they also have a library of approximately 3000 texts for guests to enjoy during their visit.
The hotel rooms are situated in a historical building, and many of the rooms reflect traditional and antique designs. They also have a block of “eco-chic” rooms with minimalist handcrafted wood features. There is an on-site restaurant and gin bar, where the menu is inspired by Portuguese and international literature.
Recent reviews suggest that the hotel does have some flaws in terms of maintenance and friendly customer service, but it sounds like book-lovers can easily overlook those negatives.
Rainha Santa Isabel – Obidos History Hotel
I walked past Rainha Santa Isabel – Obidos History Hotel in Obidos on my last night in town, and a look inside the entrance really piqued my interest. This historic hotel is located on the main pedestrian street in Obidos, so the entire historical center is right at your doorstep. It is believed the building may have been an ancient convent before becoming a tavern, a private home and eventually a hotel.
Inside the hotel you’ll find twin, double and family rooms, many with Instagram-worthy views of the historic center. You’ll welcome to come down to the living room, a cozy space with wooden beams and a dreamy fireplace, for a drink, and the hotel serves a simple, typical Portuguese breakfast.
Due to the age of the building you may find that WiFi here is not great and the elevator is unreliable. The five-star location may make up for those faults, however.
