On my recent trip to France I spent a few nights in Carcassonne. I didn’t know much about the city when I was planning my trip, but I did know one thing: I wanted to stay inside the medieval walled city of Carcassonne so that I would be able to explore the historic fortress in the morning and evening, after the crowds had left.
In this guide I’ll show you the hotel in the Cité Médiévale of Carcassonne where I chose to stay, and a few other nearby hotels that I noticed while I was exploring the city over my three-day stay.

Why Stay in the Medieval City in Carcassonne?

Most of the hotels in Carcassonne are located in the new part of the city, either in the bustling Bastide Saint-Louis neighborhood or the even more modern surroundings. From here, it’s a 25-minute uphill walk to the fortified city that Carcassonne is famous for. While there are many hotels in those areas that look lovely, I knew I wanted to stay inside the historical walled city, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Why was it so important to me to stay inside the historic walls? Well, every year, about 2.5 million tourists visit the medieval walled city of Carcassonne. Compare that to the actual population of local residents, which was exactly 27 at the time of my visit in July 2026. During the day, the crush of tourists can feel overwhelming, so by staying right inside the cité médiévale overnight you can almost have the historic fortress to yourself in the morning and evening.
The historic walled city of Carcassonne does not close overnight, so you can always walk down the hill into town for lunch or dinner and then walk back up to your hotel after dark. Similarly, you could also book a hotel in the newer part of town and then come up the hill to the castle at 11:00 pm or 6:00 am… but would you really do that? I know that when I’m faced with the choice of getting out of bed and walking half an hour uphill or getting an extra hour of sleep, I usually end up choosing the latter.
Hotel de la Cité

The most luxurious hotel in Carcassonne is the Hotel de la Cité, a five-star property located inside the former Bishop’s Palace (and adjacent to the Saint-Nazaire Basilica). The hotel features a seasonal outdoor heated swimming pool, quiet interior garden area (shown at the top of this post, as viewed from the castle ramparts), and indulgent spa area.
Hotel de la Cité offers traditional hotel rooms, a family room, and several spacious suites. If a visit to Carcassonne has been on your bucket list for a while, and you’re looking for an unforgettable stay inside the walled city, this would be my top hotel recommendation.
Hotel Le Donjon

Situated in a historic stone building built around a tranquil interior courtyard, Hotel Le Donjon in Carcassonne is one of the most family-friendly hotels inside the walled city. Rooms range from standard doubles to spacious suites, including some 35 m² family rooms that can sleep up to four guests. The walk from the hotel to the entrance of the castle and the walk along its ramparts is only one block.
La Demeure de la Cité by Jean Bacou

This was where I stayed in Carcassonne. I was looking for a small, affordable hotel within the walled city, and La Demeure da la Cité by Jean Bacou was perfect. This small bed and breakfast has six rooms with self check-in, daily housekeeping and a nice breakfast buffet each morning. My air-conditioned bedroom had a window overlooking the ramparts, and the bathroom had a deep soaker tub.
Le Logis des Remparts à l’Intérieur de la Cité Médiévale

If you’re traveling to Carcassonne with a group and need a spacious vacation rental to spread out, this is the perfect option for you! This three-bedroom, three-bathroom vacation rental inside the Cité Médiévale can sleep up to six people. Le Logis des Reparts is situated right against the ramparts on the north side of the historic city center, within easy walking distance of the fortress’ best restaurants, cafes, shops and attractions.
La Demeure du Chevalier d’Argent

This is one of the most popular vacation rentals inside the Old City of Carcassonne. At La Demeure du Chevalier d’Argent is a converted studio apartment that features a separate sleeping area, bathroom and kitchen. It can sleep up to four guests between the double bed and a sofa bed. The apartment is located on a pretty square (shown above) in front of the historic schoolhouse museum.
Appartements Pech Mary
Carcassonne has several more highly-rated vacation rental apartments, including this one, but due to UNESCO World Heritage Site restrictions they aren’t always able to put a sign out front showing exactly which door is the entry. Thus, for this apartment and the next two, I could only confirm that I liked the approximate location (within about 25 meters), not the specific building.
Appartements Pech Mary is a historic building with three rental apartments inside, including one-bedroom and studio rentals. The building is located on one of the most picturesque squares in Carcassonne, where an ancient well is now surrounded by cafe terraces and cobblestone streets.
Character Lodge in the Medieval Town
Although this vacation rental in Carcassonne is inside the historic medieval city center, the renovated interior is entirely modern. It offers guests two bedrooms, one bathroom and a pretty outdoor terrace that is perfect for sipping a morning coffee or a glass of wine at sunset.
Carcassonne My Love Apartment
It’s an easy two-minute walk from the ancient Porte Narbonnaise entrance gate (and its parking lot!) to this vacation rental in Carcassonne. The facilities and service here lean more towards basic, but that is reflected in the price that is very reasonable for an apartment that can sleep up to six people.
