I recently visited Collioure, a colorful seaside town on the Vermilion Coast in southwest France. Located only twenty-five kilometers north of the Spanish border, Collioure is rich in both French and Catalan culture, making it an ideal destination for a long weekend escape or a great home base to explore both Catalonia and the Pyrénées-Orientales. In this guide I will show you many of the best hotels in Collioure, so that you can find the perfect hotel for your own trip to the town.
For such a small town, there are quite a few hotels in Collioure (and even more vacation rental apartments). Many are located in the historic center, while others line the surrounding coastal roads and some even ascend up into the hills behind the town. Choosing a hotel right in the center of Collioure will put you in the heart of the action, while opting for a property even a five-minute drive away may give you more space and more panoramic views.
I went and checked out all of the Collioure hotels in this guide and I can confirm that they’re all a very easy walk from the center. Some of the vacation rental apartments and villas are a bit further afield, but you might prefer their locations if you’re traveling to Collioure by car and need parking.
Hotel La Frégate
This was my hotel in Collioure. I picked Hotel La Frégate because it was a reasonable price (with breakfast included), it had some of the best reviews of any hotel in Collioure, and it was an easy three-minute walk from the beach. Every morning I dropped off my room key at reception (so I didn’t have to leave it on the shore) and headed down to the beach with just my bathing suit, towel, water shoes and snorkel to spend two hours swimming with the fish at both Plage de Collioure and Plage Saint Vincent.
My room at overlooked the square where the weekly market was held, and then had views all the way to the town’s hilltop oil mill and Fort Saint-Elme. As I booked a single room it was on the small side of things, but it still had a double bed, two armchairs, a television, air conditioning and a floor-to-ceiling window.
The buffet breakfast for guests is served inside the hotel, while the on-site restaurant also offers à la carte options to the public, served on the sunny terrace. Dishes on the breakfast buffet included several types of fresh bread, pastries, fresh fruits, cereal, yogurt, pancakes, crepes, scrambled eggs, sausage, juice and coffee.
Hotel La Casa Parail
Situated in a historic Catalan mansion in the historic town centre, Hotel La Casa Parail is a more upscale (but still reasonably-priced!) hotel in Collioure.
You’d never know from the street, but hidden behind the hotel’s facade is a refreshing turquoise pool, surrounded by wisteria-filled French garden. The breakfast here is beautiful (especially enjoyed al fresco) and the airy rooms feature typical local designs.
Hôtel Princes de Catalogne
Another option right in the historic centre of Collioure is the Hôtel Princes de Catalogne, which was recently renovated to feature the same bold colors that inspired Collioure’s Fauvist art movement. Along with Le Fregate, this is one of the more affordable hotels in Collioure. As you can see from the photo above, this hotel is accessible by car for luggage drop-off, and they have a private parking area 300 meters away.
Residence Pierre & Vacances Les Balcons de Collioure
For the next two hotels we’re going to head one kilometer east along the coastline of the bay. These hotels are three minutes by car from the center, or a leisurely fifteen-minute walk along the waterfront promenade.
Pierre & Vacances is a well-known name in the French holiday rental market. They have been specializing in aparthotel rentals since the 1970s, and I actually stayed in their hotel in Figueres earlier this summer.
The Pierre & Vacances hotel in Collioure features studio apartments with kitchenettes, including many with balconies or terraces that look over the sea (which is right across the street). For families, many of the rooms here come with a bunk bed option so that you can sleep two adults and two children in the same room. The hotel has an outdoor pool that is usually open from mid-April until the end of September, but you can also swim in the sea year-round!
Le Relais de Trois Mas
According to my Frommers France guidebook, this is the #1 best hotel in Collioure. Le Relais de Trois Mas is known for having a swimming pool terrace with stunning views of the Mediterranean and the historic center of Collioure.
There are a wide range of rooms here, from standard seaview rooms (similar in design to those at Le Fregate or La Casa Parail, but with a better view) to spacious suites named after the artists who have passed through Collioure. Rooms are carved into the side of a cliff and some require stair access, so this is not a good choice for travelers with mobility limitations.
Le Relais de Trois Mas has a Michelin-starred restaurant (La Balette) on site. Make sure to reserve your table well in advance if you’ll be visiting and dining during high season.
🇫🇷 French Lesson! You’ll see the word “relais” in the name of many French hotels around the country. Historically, a relais was a rest stop where those traveling long distances by horse-drawn carriage could swap out their team of horses, pause for a meal and possibly rent a room for the night. The word is still used by innkeepers, hoteliers and especially bed and breakfast owners whose accommodation provides a welcome rest for weary travelers.
Hôtel le Mas des Citronniers
The name of this hotel references the abundant citrus trees that grow along the Mediterranean coastline in Spain and France.
Hotel le Mas des Citronniers is located inside a historic villa that is an easy five-minute walk from the beach (and seven minutes from the train station). The rooms here are bright and airy, and a highlight is the daily breakfast buffet featuring fresh, seasonal, local ingredients.
Hotel des Templiers
In Provence, the village of Saint Paul de Vence is home to Château de La Chèvre d’Or, a hotel that famously traded accommodation and meals for artworks by masters like Picasso, Chagall, Cocteau and Kandinsky.
Here in Collioure, the Hotel Des Templiers is the local equivalent. Its walls showcase more than 2,000 works of art from the modern and contemporary artists who have passed through Collioure and stopped for a rest or a meal here at Hotel Des Templiers. Look on the walls to see a photo of the hotel’s founder, arm-in-arm with Pablo Picasso himself!
The hotel is located in the heart of Collioure, just steps away from the beach and right in front of the castle. The rooms in this family-run hotel are older and slightly dated, and the breakfast doesn’t get great reviews, but if you’re just looking for a place to sleep and like historic, locally-owned properties in great locations then it’s a solid option.
Hotel Le Bon Port
This Collioure hotel is noteworthy for its mix of standard hotel rooms and vacation apartment rentals that can sleep up to six adults. Located in the shadow of the town’s historic olive oil mill, Hotel Le Bon Port faces the sea and is an easy five-minute walk from the Faubourg neighborhood, where local restaurants line the half-moon beach.
Hôtel-Restaurant Les Roches Brunes
Along with Le Relais de Trois Mas, this is one of the select number of luxury hotels in Collioure. Les Roches Brunes errs on the discreet side of things, with minimalist design and lots of natural light in the guestrooms (which all have a terrace or balcony). Neither the entrance nor the guest rooms are visible from the street, adding to the feeling of privacy.
Although it hasn’t earned a star (yet), the hotels’ restaurant, La Mamma, is noted in the Michelin guide for its “creative, hearty Catalan cuisine” in “bohemian chic” surroundings. Call ahead to book a table, but don’t bother trying to go for a drink at the adjacent hotel bar – it’s exclusively for guests.
Vacation Rentals in Collioure
I wasn’t able to check out all of these Collioure vacation rentals as they’re typically not open to the public, but they all have great reviews and look like places I would be open to staying on my next trip to Collioure.
Historic Fisherman’s House
This historic fisherman’s house is located just a few steps from the town center and it has the two amenities I always look for in a beachfront property: air conditioning and a washing machine. Built right into the cliff, it has a terrace with beautiful views of the sea and a charming stone facade.
Villa on the Collioure Waterfront
This villa in Collioure is in high demand, with several reviews from return visitors. It can sleep up to six people across three rooms, and stands out for having a private parking garage. There’s also a beautiful terrace with sea views.
Window Over Collioure
This one-bedroom loft apartment in the heart of Collioure can sleep four guests. Recently renovated, it features modern design and amenities (including air conditioning!) with services like shops, restaurants and parking just seconds away.
