“Haven’t you heard? I live here now.”
Or, that’s I said when another traveler asked me when I was checking out of Sunflower Stay & Surf in Canggu, Bali.
I’d been staying in Canggu’s cutest and most comfortable guesthouse for the past five nights, and would have happily stayed five hundred more if I didn’t have to catch a flight to Kuala Lumpur later that week.
In just a few nights, Sunflower Stay & Surf quickly began to feel like home, and I can highly recommend it as the best accommodation in Canggu, Bali.
I stayed at two other guesthouses in the popular surfing village and although they were all a similar price, Sunflower Stay & Surf was miles ahead in design, comfort, staff and location.
Rooms at Sunflower Stay & Surf
Sunflower Stay & Surf has ten guestrooms: one row of five on the ground floor, and a second row of five upstairs. When I decided to extend my stay in the hotel I moved from a ground floor room to a top floor room and can confidently say that both are great. The rooms upstairs have some bar seating in front of each door, while rooms on both floors have laundry racks where you can hang your swimsuits and towels after you go the beach.
The rooms at Sunflower Stay & Surf are bright and spacious, with floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding doors. Each room has a double bed, bedside tables, a dresser and a cabinet. You also get towels (including facecloths!) and beach towels to use throughout your stay. Of course, the rooms are air conditioned, but the beautiful breeze coming in from the beach meant that I only turned mine on a few times.
Bathrooms are equally clean and modern, with gorgeous tiles and basic toiletries in the shower. There is great hot water and strong water pressure here, unlike at the two other guesthouses in Canggu that I visited (for four nights each!).
Facilities at Sunflower Stay & Surf
I spent more than a few days just lounging by the pool at Sunflower Stay & Surf. There are four sun loungers with mattresses, plus two double mattresses at pool level. It was the perfect place to read a good book and relax in the shade (with some SPF 100!).
Even cooler, Sunflower Stay & Surf has an upstairs lounge and co-working space with lots of electrical outlets, a powerful fan and all different kinds of seating, from traditional bar stools to a canopy bed and a swinging platform. This is where I worked on a few different blog posts (like my guide to Canggu’s best vegan and vegetarian foods).
There is also a communal kitchen at the hotel. I popped a few cold drinks into the fridge, but otherwise preferred to eat at the nearby restaurants. However, lots of other guests whipped up full meals in the kitchen and ate them together at the large, shaded picnic tables.
Talk to any members of the family working at the reception desk and they can hook you up with scooter rentals, private drivers, island tours, surf boards or surf lessons. If you can dream it, they can make it happen!
Details & Designs at Sunflower Stay & Surf
Of course, I have to mention the amazing design at Sunflower Stay & Surf. The whole place feels like a tropical riad, combining elements of Indonesian design with Moroccan flair. I mean, room numbers are painted on tiny surfboards and you can hang a towel on a pineapple-shaped hook! There is a swing… with cacti! The path to the hotel is painted in bright yellow with swirling graffiti and a map of the island’s top surf spots!
It’s the perfect place to stage an Instagram photo shoot (in fact, more than a few guests were posing poolside, as you can see on Instagram!) – but remember that it’s gated, private property and you should be a guest if you’re planning to take photos here.
What’s Nearby at Sunflower Stay & Surf?
Sunflower Stay & Surf is located on Pantai Batu Bolong, the main street in Canggu. Fortunately, it’s set back a bit from the road so you aren’t bothered by pumping bass or booming motorcycles.
You can walk to the beach in less than ten minutes, with most of the route having some sidewalk access (so it’s fine for strollers, if you’re traveling with kids).
As well, you’re within walking distance from all but one of my favorite Canggu restaurants, and you’re less than five minutes by foot from at least twenty different places to eat.
The streets around the guesthouse are packed with shops, restaurants, minimarkets, pharmacies, spas, ATMs and pretty much everything else you could ever need during your trip to Bali. In my opinion, this is the best location in town.
Reserving a Room at Sunflower Stay & Surf
With only ten rooms, and a growing online following, Sunflower Stay & Surf is often fully booked. If you’re traveling to Canggu and need accommodation, make sure to book your room well in advance.
If you’ve got any questions about my own stay at the guesthouse, feel free to let leave a comment below and I’ll respond ASAP!
(In case you were wondering, I paid for my stay in full and did not disclose to the hotel that I was a blogger.)
I’ve got a whole section of the blog devoted to Indonesia, including guesthouses, restaurants, activities, trip planning advice and complete destination guides.
