It has the perfect location for exploring Sète, whether you’re visiting for the canals, museums or beaches.
Georges Hostel has a great mix of private rooms and dorm rooms spread over four levels, so you’ll be able to find a room that fits your budget and travel style.
I stayed at Georges Hostel in Sète for several nights this summer, and this casual hostel-hotel hybrid was perfect for me as an adventurous solo female traveler who still appreciates some little comforts.

Where is Georges Hostel in Sète?
Sète has a unique layout, as it’s built along the edges of a volcanic mountain that separates the Thau Lagoon from the Mediterranean Sea. The historic center is built right on the water along a series of canals, while the newer districts rise up the sides of the mountain.
Georges Hostel is located in the main town center, a block away from the Royal Canal. From here, it’s a fifteen-minute walk to the train station (crossing two bridges en route). There are also public buses (including #1 and #2) that make the trip in about the same time (but save you some steps in the summer heat). You can pay for your bus trip by tapping your credit card as you board.
Many of the best things to do in Sète are located within easy walking distance of the hostel, including the departure point for boat tours, the busy covered food market, and several museums. To reach the Mediterranean beaches it’s a 25-minute bus ride, with stops in both directions within a block or two of the hostel.
My Room at George Hostel in Sète
Georges Hostel in Sète offers dorm rooms, standard private rooms and family rooms. I spent several nights in one of their private rooms, which had a double bed, private bathroom and air conditioning. There was also an elevator from the lobby to my room on the hotel’s top floor, so I didn’t have to go up or down any steps. I did notice that some of the other rooms on my floor were accessed via a short stairway (about four or five stairs).
Overall I thought the room was perfect for a short stay in Sete. The room had a clothing rack where I could hang my wet swimwear after a day at the beach, shelves to keep the things I needed on hand and a skylight that let the stars shine in at night. The room would have been tight for two adults with large suitcases, but with carry-on size bags or backpacks I think you’d have enough space.
My attached bathroom was also more than adequate, with a sink, toilet and shower. Towels were changed daily even when I forgot to put up the sign asking for room cleaning. Probably my own criticism would be that the hand soap dispenser was empty and I kept forgetting to ask them to refill it when I was passing through the lobby. I just used the provided shower gel from the shower when I was washing my hands.
Breakfast at Georges Hostel in Sète
Guests at Georges Hostel Sete have the option of adding on a light, continental breakfast in the morning. Dishes on offer include fresh fruit, baguette slices, pastries and coffee. I also think there was cereal, milk and yogurt to the right of the spread shown above – just ask at the hostel! As per the sign in the photo above, they do ask that you let them know by 11:00 pm the night before if you want breakfast the next day, but I think they can be a bit lenient on this if you forget.
Amenities at Georges Hostel in Sète
I liked staying in a private room at Georges Hostel because I had the privacy of a standard hotel room with the amenities of a busy hostel.
I spent a few hours working in one of the common spaces, which was equipped with tables, different kinds of chairs, electrical outlets, board games and a book exchange. Through the glass door shown above there is also an outdoor courtyard, which was too hot to use during my August visit but would likely be nice from September to June.
Georges Hostel also has a communal kitchen, which was in frequent use during my visit. The kitchen seemed to be kept quite clean, and featured a fridge, stovetop, oven, microwaves and ample cooking utensils.
Not shown above is the hostel’s laundry room, which had two large washing machines available for guests to use after checking in with reception.
Finally, the reception desk at Georges Hostel also doubles as a cafe and bar. Although I opted out of breakfast I did have an Aperol Spritz during happy hour, and a cappuccino one morning. Savvy locals also come into the cafe area to enjoy the quiet, air-conditioned seating, affordable drinks and light snacks.
The Overall Vibe at Georges Hostel in Sete
Overall, I would describe the atmosphere at Georges Hotel in Sete as busy but relaxed. I noticed that many of the travelers staying here were in their thirties or forties, including many cyclists who were traveling the length of the Canal du Midi. As such, there were often people around in the common areas to chat with, but there wasn’t a loud party atmosphere.
I didn’t notice the hostel organizing any activities during my stay, but they did have a chalkboard that was updated each week to show what was going on around Sète, including special events and free things to do. If you were looking for someone to explore with, chances are good you could find them here!
Would I Recommend Georges Hostel in Sete?
Yes, I would recommend Georges Hostel in Sète! I have no regrets about booking a private room at this hostel and would happily stay here again (although as a travel blogger I suppose it’s my duty to check out new places…).
If you’re on a budget the dorms here are probably the cheapest options in Sète, and even the private rooms cost well less than the average price of a normal Sète hotel room during the busy summer season. The location is good, the hostel is clean and quiet, and the 24-hour reception adds to your peace of mind.
Other Budget Hotels in Sète
Accommodation in Sète tends to be highly seasonal, with prices spiking during the summer vacation period and quickly lowering as you move into shoulder season. Depending on when you’re traveling, you might also be able to find a good deal at one of these properties:
- La Maison Verte – A pretty green historic building in the center that has been converted into comfortable apartment rentals. I considered booking here but ultimately decided to for a hostel for the social aspect.
- Hotel Sables d’Or – Midway between the town and the beach, this simple hotel has the perfect location for anyone traveling by car.
- Hotel de la Plage – This hotel is located directly across the street from the beach, meaning you can go from bed to sea in less than two minutes.
